Why do I need to have my wisdom teeth out if they don't hurt?

Odontectomy

Impacted tooth/teeth usually occurs in this age of modern oral health. Mainly because of the processed food diets we normally consume thereby limiting the work of our masticatory functions. This in turn causes limited growth of the maxilla & mandible, that gives risk to absence/limited space for the 3rd molars. Canines & premolars are also susceptible to impaction. Odontectomy is the procedure done to retrieve impacted tooth/teeth. Reasonable incision is made on the affected area. Bone reduction is commonly done to facilitate its removal.

Alveoloplasty / Alveoloectomy

Extractions made without any care to the Alveolar Bone/Socket usually results in irregular contour when healed. This procedure is done to smoothen out this irregularly shaped bone in order to receive the prosthesis

Vestibuloplasty

Early extractions render the residual ridge flat. Vestibuloplasty re-contours the vestibule to augment the ridge so as to prepare it to receive the denture.

Apicoectomy

Infected tooth/teeth wherein root canal treatment is not enough due to presence of enormous infection at the apex.  Apicoectomy is done, where the apex is cut and removed with the lesion.

Bone Augmentation

The advent of synthetic bone materials gave more options to dental practitioners to save the tooth of their patients. Bone support the tooth in the dental arch. Infected/compromised bone health will lead to tooth loss. But because of this procedure, it can be prevented.

Cystectomy

Removal of oral cysts

Incision & Drainage

Long-standing infection with pus w/c cannot be arrested by antibiotic must be incised and drained.

Flap Replacement

For sever cases of periodontal diseases w/c do not respond to routine deep scaling & root planning, a flap is raised and  direct scaling and debridement is done to involved root.

Gingivoplasty/Gingivectomy

Gums are re-shaped/re-contoured. Usually this is done when the tooth is to receive a prosthesis or laminates. Pathologic reconsiderations are also taken into view. Gingival hyperplasis and the like.

Crown Lengthening

Some tooth/teeth are naturally short that makes it difficult to restore using crowns & jacket. This procedure is done so as to lengthen its clinical crown.

WHY DO I NEED TO HAVE MY WISDOM TEETH OUT IF THEY DON'T HURT?

Reasons why "you" should have it removed:

  • As a general rule. All impacted teeth should be removed unless removal is contraindicated.
  • Preventive Dentistry dictates that impacted teeth be removed before complications arise
  • Early removal reduces the post-operative morbidity and allows for the best healing
  • In this day of excellent dental care, the young person who is receiving good dental therapy should have all the third molars removed before the age of 17 years.

More reasons..

  • Prevention of periodontal disease - it resorbs (i.e. Eats up the bone/root of the adjacent tooth)
  • Preventions of Dental Caries
  • Prevention of Periconitis
  • Prevention of root resorption
  • Impacted teeth under a dental prosthesis
  • Prevention of odontogenic cysts and tumors
  • Prevention of pain of unexplained origin
  • Prevention of fracture of the jaw
  • Facilitation of orthodontic treatment
